Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb, 62, died on Sunday after a harrowing battle with colon cancer that began in 2010 and spread to his liver. Robin’s twin brother Maurice succumbed to the same disease in 2004.

Typically colon cancer, or colorectal cancer, presents no early warning signs. As in Robin’s case, many patients aren’t diagnosed until the disease spreads to other organs. What makes the six-time Grammy winner’s death especially tragic is that colon cancer develops slowly and is largely preventable with regular screening.

A Colonoscopy is the only cancer detection test that also prevents the disease by allowing doctors to find polyps and, during the same test, remove them before they turn into cancer. Other screenings include a Fecal Occult Blood Test and Flexible Sigmoidoscopy.

These screenings can be lifesavers for people who are over the age of 50, have a close family member with colorectal cancer, or have symptoms like a change in the frequency of bowel movements, bloating or fullness of the abdomen, rectal bleeding, or onset of fatigue or weight loss that is otherwise unexplained.

The problem is that fewer than half of the Americans who fit the profile above get the recommended tests. Please do yourself and your family a big favor and contact our office to schedule a consultation. In addition to treating hemorrhoids and other related conditions, Dr. Bub and Dr. Stasik offer experience and expertise in the latest diagnostic techniques for colorectal diseases.

The Lehigh Valley Hemorrhoid Treatment Center is the only practice in the region that performs transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD) — a less painful treatment for symptomatic hemorrhoids.

The procedures, which last an average time of 35 minutes and require only sedation, not general anesthesia, are being performed at Westfield Hospital.

With THD, the major arteries that supply the hemorrhoids are ligated with a stitch and then pulled up into the rectum. Because none of the hemorrhoidal tissue is removed, patients have much less pain than after standard hemorrhoid surgery.

So far results have been excellent! Patients report about three or four days of pain compared to two weeks of pain after surgical hemorrhoidectomy. However, not all patients are candidates for THD, so make sure to consult with Dr. Bub and Dr. Stasik.

When you feel the need to have a bowel movement, don’t wait too long to use the bathroom.
